Things worse than cannabis #2: Cars.
While their design changed dramatically since conceptualization, cars serve the same purpose as in 1904: utilize the the energy of combustion to drive from point A to point B. Unfortunately this combustion is (like in 1904) powered by fuel made from crude oil - which in 1904 cost 62 cents per barrel instead of today’s $113 average.
Environmental and economic impacts of oil-based fuel aside, driving itself is harmful. Simply operating a vehicle emits pollution that can cause impaired immune systems, lung inflammation, acute respiratory problems, contribute to birth defects and make healthy children 3-4 times as likely to develop asthma. This devious mix of carbon dioxide (greenhouse gas supreme) and carbon monoxide (the invisible killer) is causing environmental damage so disastrous the climatologist community can’t even decide which disaster will strike first.
Besides its exhaust, almost every other car part makes this contraption look less like a convenience and more like a screaming metal death trap. Each piece of an automobile is dripping with toxic substances. That desirable “new car smell” is actually a series of unstable chemical sealants and adhesives that emit fumes during manufacturing. What you’re really smelling is glue, carpet cleaners and a (supposedly) non-lethal dose of Benzene.
Nearly 36,000 people in the United States die annually from car crashes. Safety features continue to be produced and enhanced - but unfortunately so do distractions, like electronic billboards, cell phones, in-car navigation and music systems.
Some claim that a society centered around driving poses health risks from being too sedentary. Some in the United States argue that the Department of Motor Vehicles is too bureaucratic for driving to be worthwhile, yet women in Saudi Arabia cannot legally drive for fear that it will lead to rampant sex, pornography and more homosexuals. This policy clearly varies worldwide, but generally adheres to one simple rule: Use cars responsibly and don’t hurt anyone else.
… Well shucks, I can think of other things that mentality applies to.
